Xiaomi has proved many times that it stands in the forefront of the smartphone industry. The beginning of 2016 marked the successful launch of high-powered device Xiaomi Mi 5. Without a doubt, a phone like this can be called “smart”, because technologies Xiaomi develops plant more and more seeds of artificial intelligence. Company’s new contenders to earn international recognition Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus also have daring high-tech specifications.
Performance
Qualcomm has supplied Xiaomi with an advanced chipset Snapdragon. It runs complex applications fast and gives a smooth transition when multitasking. Xiaomi Mi 5 was equipped with a next-generation Snapdragon 820 Quad-Core with 2.15 GHz. Mi 5s modification received an improved Snapdragon 821 with the same frequency. Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus has a real heavyweight Snapdragon 821 with the highest clock speed, up to 2.35 GHz. Each smartphone hosts Adreno 530 GPU graphic controller.
Know-how features
Without a doubt, Xiaomi moves mobile technology forward. Its sophisticated ideas were implemented in a smart fingertip sensor. Mi 5 was the first model in the “Mi” series to have it. Built in under a Home button the sensor recognizes your finger pad pattern instantly.
Mi 5s Plus has the reader on the back side underneath the dual camera. Its technology remained the same: it captures “information” from your finger sharply and gives access to all the stored data.
Xiaomi took aim to improve the durability of the sensors and has patented a technology, which enables to integrate fingertip sensor not only into a mechanical button but also a sensor panel. The new Mi 5s boasts the ultrasonic sensor type, embedded under its display.
A worthwhile addition to Mi 5 and Mi 5s Plus was an IR-port. With its help home appliances can be controlled remotely. TV sets, fans, loud speakers, camera and others are within an easy reach owing to the smartphone app. Mi 5s, because of an array of other notable features, does not support this function.
Each model of the three “wears” an NFC chip for a fast data exchange between the nearby devices, duo Nano SIM-card slot and GPS sensor. They also include high-speed Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
Camera that does work for you
Xiaomi has made a giant leap forward with its advanced and adaptive cameras. With an “assistant” like this, you can shoot the way they do in Hollywood!
Mi 5s Plus has a dual sensor set (RGB and BW) with 13 MP each. They can work independently, e. g. if you want to make only black-and-white photos, or together to obtain a crisp and clear image. The phone has a feature to roll in slow-motion and in the highest resolution 4K format.
Mi 5s adopted a single 12 MP camera, which provides Full HD 1080p footage with 120 fps.
Mi 5 is supplied with a 16 MP camera and has a
Wide display experience
One of the key attributes of a mobile companion for a modern user is a convenient display. It is kind of symbolic that the 5th generation of Xiaomi smartphones is provided with 5+ inch displays that play out in fresh colors.
Mi 5s and Mi 5 share the same screen size — 5.15″. Mi 5s Plus has a 5.7″ wide display. They all recognize 16 million colors and have a resolution 1920×1080 (Full HD). Pixel density is 428 ppi for Mi 5 and Mi 5s, 386 ppi for Mi 5s Plus. Each model is armed with an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen.
Mi 5 and Mi 5s received an ultra-bright 600 nit display. Mi 5s Plus has a level of 550 nit brightness. An advanced technology allows reducing power consumption with this backlighting.
Expressing the interest for 3D Touch, Xiaomi let its users feel the advantages of such a technology. Among the three smartphones, only Mi 5s was equipped with pressure-sensitive sensors. Now Mi phone owners can use their device with convenience and faster.
Primary and secondary memory
Each phone has the same ROM memory — up to 128 GB. An internal memory is arranged differently: Mi 5 and Mi 5s have 3 / 4 GB RAM, Mi 5s Plus received 6 GB RAM. All of the three models have the LPDDR4 specification.
Looks matter
Mi 5 has a glass or a ceramic body. Ceramic is a hard material, which undergoes many stages of handling, reaching 8 on Moh’s scale. Such a casing operates at a cooler temperature and is wear-resistant.
Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus have a metallic “shell” and look as striking as Mi 5. “S” line has a standard color set: gray, silver, gold and rose gold. Mi 5 came out in similar colors: gray, silver gold and a stand-out purple color.
Xiaomi Mi 5 is 144.6×69.2×7.25 mm and weighs 139 gram. Xiaomi Mi 5s has dimensions 145.6×70.3×8.25 mm and is 145 gram light. Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus catches eye being 154.6×77.7×7.95 mm, with 168 gram.
Power supply
Xiaomi opted for larger power cells in its mobile phones. Screen size, processor performance and heavy use in the all three resulted in taking bigger batteries that help a lot. Xiaomi Mi 5 offers a hefty 3000 mAh, Xiaomi Mi 5s has a 3200 mAh unit and Xiaomi Mi 5s was combined with a massive 3800 mAh battery.
A modern USB Type-C connector is available in every modification. Quick Charge 3.0 technology, added to each model, allows to “fill up” almost 40% faster.
